Social Marketing for Your Home Based Business

Saving the world, or a small corner of it, could be a money making proposition.

If you care deeply about the future of human-kind, the environment or other issues of the day, you may be able to start a home based business using social marketing.  Social marketing is taking a social concern and using a business-like approach to promote it and produce revenue.  It is essentially solving a problem that makes the world a little bit better, and being paid to do it.  For example, 2 local women created a cloth shopping bag (beneficial because it reduces use of plastic bags known to clog landfills), contracted with city government to help manufacture it with their logo on it, and now the bags are selling like hotcakes, to agencies who give them away for promotional purposes.

Journalists like stories about businesses that exemplify a new paradigm:  ”making a living while making a difference” instead of just making a buck.  The story of your socially salient doings may be a vignette on a local radio station, or the 6 o’clock news.  Newspapers (on and off line) will also be happy for you to submit guest editorials regarding your business concept, even if you’ve yet to implement it.

If this concept intrigues you, search within for ideas. With the economy in the shape it’s in, concerns about global warming, the need for alternative energy and new infrastructures… this is the time for social marketing to propagate a new economic segment. Eastern philosophies such as Zen hold that each person deserves a “calling” or means of “right livelihood”.  By reaching beyond a strictly monetary perspective, your calling will become evident. It is also held that consideration and kindness in business operations will bring all the money and material goods you need, and a much greater capacity to enjoy your success.

This is the best software I have seen for my home based business! It took a little getting used to, so I played my own customer (from my web site http://www.fairmed.com) using my cell phone as the customer & my office phone as my own ‘consultant number”. I practiced so I would know how it all works. At first I had the credit card requirement on, and then I realized if I turned it off, I could make free calls until I got the hang of it. Very cool….
